Howard Goodall's Story of Music
In Pop Music in Practice class we have been watching Howard Goodall's Story of Music. This is a comprehensive BBC2 TV series consisting of six, hour long episodes in which Goodall traces the story of music from the ancient world, to the modern day. The series presents a timeline that shows the development of music from its origins in the stone age, and the influence of classical music in shaping modern popular music. Goodall explains the development of musical instruments, notation and harmony, and provides a summary of the composers and musicians whose advances were significant to the progression of music, as well as exploring the development of blues, jazz and world music.
Watching the series has been very interesting. Goodall presents the story of music from his own perspective, avoiding technical terminology that can often be confusing for those not familiar with music theory, providing a clear and complete history of the development of music.
